Foot Pain Q & A

Foot pain can come from any number of sources in your foot, and identifying the location and type of pain you’re experiencing can help you podiatrist determine the cause of your pain. Foot pain can range from mild soreness to sharp, stabbing sensations. Numbness and tingling or pain at specific times of day — like when you get out of bed in the morning — can also signal specific causes of pain.

Pain can also be located at specific joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. If you’ve experienced foot trauma, there may also be signs of bruising, cuts, or scrapes.

What causes foot pain?

In order to narrow down the cause of your foot pain, your doctor examines your foot and checks specific areas for signs of pain. Common causes of foot pain include:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Heel spurs
  • Neuropathy
  • Fungal infections
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Bunions
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Hammertoe
  • Neuromas
  • Ganglion cysts
  • Corns and calluses

The doctors also provide diabetic foot care and wound care to reduce your risk of infection and injury. The foot and ankle surgeons at Foot & Ankle Concepts Inc. can also set or surgically correct fractures.

How is foot pain diagnosed?

To diagnose foot pain, your podiatrist first begins with a thorough foot exam. Your doctor asks about your symptoms, where and when you feel the pain, and how long you’ve been experiencing it. During your exam, your doctor checks the flexibility and strength of the muscles in your feet and the range of motion of the joints in your feet and checks your skin for signs of inflammation, infection, and swelling.

Based on your exam, your doctor may order additional testing — like X-rays, blood work, an MRI, or CT scan — to better understand the health of your feet. If there are any abnormal findings on these tests or you need advanced testing of your blood vessels or nerves, your doctor orders those additional tests.

Once testing is completed, your doctor establishes your diagnosis and recommends a treatment strategy to help you.

What is the treatment for foot pain?

In many cases, the team at Foot & Ankle Concepts Inc. is able to treat foot pain with conservative methods, including rehabilitation, lifestyle modifications, orthotics, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications.

Your doctor may also recommend wearing a different pair of shoes or using padding or a brace to protect your foot or ankle. In more serious cases, your doctor may recommend surgery to treat your condition.
