Diabetic Foot Care Q & A

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic health condition that causes higher-than-normal blood glucose levels. Glucose provides your cells with its preferred source of energy and comes from the food you eat. Insulin, which is a hormone your body makes in the pancreas, moves the sugar from your blood into the cell.

People with diabetes either don’t make insulin or the insulin they do make isn’t working as it should. Diabetes increases your risk of a number of health conditions, including heart disease, peripheral neuropathy, and foot ulcers.

Why is foot care important with diabetes?

If not well controlled, the sugar in your blood can damage your blood vessels and nerve endings, affecting both circulation and your ability to feel pain. The damage often affects the smaller nerve endings and blood vessels in your hands and feet. If you get a cut on your foot and can’t feel it and your blood isn’t able to circulate to the area to promote healing, the wound may become infected and lead to more serious problems, including a severe infection that requires amputation.

About 15% of people with diabetes develop a foot ulcer at some point, and as many as 14 to 24% of those with an ulcer will need an amputation.

What is diabetic foot care?

Diabetic foot care is the careful inspection and monitoring of your feet to evaluate them for wounds or potential problems. You should inspect your feet daily and come to Foot & Ankle Concepts Inc. for a thorough evaluation at least once a year, more often if you have a foot problem.

When you come in for care, your specialist at Foot & Ankle Concepts Inc. evaluates your feet, trims corns and calluses, and cuts your toenails for you if you find it difficult to do so yourself.

How can custom-made orthotics help me?

Foot & Ankle Concepts Inc. offers custom-made orthotics for people with diabetes. The use of custom orthotics, along with good nutrition and special shoes for diabetes, may significantly reduce your risk of developing a diabetic foot ulcer at all.

The custom-made orthotics cushion and protect your feet from injury.
